Temporary Laboratory Manager
Advanced Environmental Biotechnology Centre

The individual will need to be able to work in a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural environment and will take responsibility for the coordination and management of laboratory activities.  This includes, but is not limited to, coordinating ordering of reagents and materials, liaising with vendors for ordering and service.  Tracking project costs, maintaining inventories, collecting and maintaining safety records and training, orientation of staff and students, and maintenance of laboratory registers, as well as facilitating visitor access and orientation of lab tours as required.

Job Scope:

• Administration of Research Centre, coordinating orders and payment, financial management of various research project and inventory. Planning and monitoring laboratory safety through risk assessment, establishing SOPs and SWP, application of approval associated with biological, equipment, chemical hazard and filing of MSDS.
• Management of research staff and student, provide support and training. Manage training record, culture collection, and GMO register
• Responsible for Security and safety of research centre, managing equipment manuals, provide support and coordination of equipment and facilities maintenance
• Provide IT support for office network for research centre and equipment

Requirements:

• A recognized degree in Biology, Bioprocess or Engineering is important.  Applicants with PhD’s are particularly encouraged to apply, but individuals with BSc or MSc are also welcome
• Familiar with Microbiology and molecular biology, bioprocesses, and Environmental Engineering work
• Strong inclination to provide support for applied research and development work

Significant funding has been provided for a research project to investigate anaerobic degradation of Industrial waste and/or wastewater as organic substrates.  There will be interest in issues concerning bioprocess operation from lab scale reactors to pilot scale operation such as inhibition from both organic and inorganic components, impact of operating temperature, feed composition, and reactor design and operation. Responsibilities:

You will work on a technology development project pertaining to Biocracking and Biodesulfurization of Heavy Fuel Oils into Marine Distillates. Knowledge and experience in the application of bacteria for the removal of sulphur in aqueous systems, and biocatalyst in oil decontamination will be advantageous. The project includes laboratory testwork on bacteria cultivation, use of surfactants in oil water emulsification, biocracking of sulphur containing aromatic compounds, biodesulphurisation of sulphur containing organic compounds.  There will also be work on process development and design of a small pilot plant. You will be familiar with various techniques for water and oil analysis especially for sulphur content, and various methods for oil water separation.

Requirements: 

Master/PhD in Chemical/Environmental Engineering or Chemistry
Relevant experience in biological wastewater treatment, preferably with industry exposure.  Some knowledge in microbiology would be an advantage
Ability to set up/conduct laboratory and pilot testwork

All chemical related works at the pilot plant
Setting up the pilot plant, and to co-ordinate and monitor the whole testing programme

Post-doctoral Research Fellow (2 positions)
Advanced Environmental Biotechnology Centre

Responsibilities:

The Advanced Environmental Biotechnology Centre (AEBC) is a newly established research centre within the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) at NTU. The AEBC is a multi-disciplinary research group aimed at developing Biotechnology solutions for Singaporean water and environmental industries. The AEBC in collaboration with DHI Singapore has recently been granted an EWI funded Industry Led Research Project Call to develop an advanced microbial detection system to monitor potential pathogens that threaten aquaculture, bathing and reservoir water systems. The AEBC is therefore looking for 2 post-doctoral researchers to join the project. The individuals will be highly motivated, able to work in a multi-disciplinary team, and will have experience in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology. The positions will entail a combination of environmental sampling and nucleic acid extraction, high throughput sequencing of microbial and phytoplankton communities, associated bioinformatics, functional gene analysis by DNA array, probe design, and good microbiology laboratory skills.

Requirements:

A recognized PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology or Environmental Microbiology & Biotechnology
Expertise and experience in Bioinformatics as well as high throughput sequencing is essential
Fresh water and / or marine microbial ecology is beneficial
Good planning and management skills

Two Research Scholars

Background

As DHI and AEBC-NEWRI have received funding for “Biosorption” and “nitrogen removal via nitrite” projects. This are intended to explore energy self-sufficiency in sewage treatment plants. There is now requirement for 2 research scholars to join the research team comprising researchers from the university and industry. The successful candidates shall be provided with research scholarships.

Job Scope (1): 

• The successful candidate shall be enrolled in NTU as a PhD student and shall study the Biosorption process with focus on microbial communities profiling, bioprocess optimization and interaction between microbes and the engineered system

• The successful candidate shall participate in the design, planning, and execution of the laboratory and pilot scale bioreactors

• The candidate shall participate in the design and execution of the sampling program, sample analysis, and data analysis

The individuals will have experience in Molecular Microbiology, and will integrate into existing AEBC projects designed to identify interactions between organisms that can ultimate lead to improvements in bioprocesses. This will entail a combination of molecular microbial genetics, cloning, mutagenesis, gene expression, reporter probe design and microscopy with analysis.

Requirements:

• A recognized PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology or Environmental Microbiology & Biotechnology
• Expertise and experience in Molecular Microbiology (fresh PhD graduates are welcome, but 2-3 years of post-doctoral experience will be an advantage)

• Skills in cloning, mutagenesis, development and application of FISH probes, reporter gene development and application, microscopy (both fluorescence and confocal) and image analysis

• Skills in molecular community analysis, including DGGE, T-RFLP, sequencing, proteomics and transcriptomics are also desirable
