NTU and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) announces the official opening of Advanced Environmental Biotechnology Centre (AEBC).
NTU and Australia's University of New South Wales (UNSW) yesterday jointly launched the Advanced Environmental Biotechnology Centre (AEBC). Set up to study micro-organisms for water and environmental technologies, AEBC is supported by the Economic Development Board and Environment & Water Industry Programme Office. Drawing on technology-based bio-process expertise at NTU and UNSW's strength in microbial and marine ecology, AEBC aims to tackle issues related to water production, purification and reclamation, and to reduce the energy use in these processes. It will also develop monitoring capabilities, sensor systems and management programmes to safeguard Singapore's coastal waters, as these have an impact on desalination, shipping, recreation and food resources.

S$206m boost for environmental life sciences engineering
NTU has been awarded S$120m in government funding over 10 years to set up and lead the development of the Singapore Centre on Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE), which will be the world’s largest such centre when it opens next year.
Its aim in five years: to become a world leader in the emerging area of microbial biofilms – which studies how communities of micro-organisms such as bacteria aggregate and develop – and a source of novel environmental engineering applications that tap the hidden power of such communities to solve problems such as dirty water, toxic pollutants and infectious diseases.
