On 18 November 2017, the LEF project 'Mitigation of Pollution at Kandy Lake and Mid-Canal Sri Lanka' was conferred the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award – Project category by the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) at AFEO's 35th annual Conference (CAFEO) held in Bangkok, Thailand.
The project is a collaboration between NTU NEWRIComm and the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
Earlier, the project was accorded the IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement award in July 2017. The Institute of Engineers' Singapore (IES) further nominated the project for ASEAN Award.
The award by AFEO gives recognition to engineering projects that demonstrate outstanding engineering skills, which has made a significant contribution to the engineering progress and the quality of life in ASEAN. The project at Kandy Lake, while located outside the Southeast Asia region, was given a special consideration for
(1) Contributing to the well-bring of people and communities
(2) Resourcefulness in planning and in the solution of design problems
(3) Pioneering in use of materials and methods innovations in planning, design and construction
(4) Unusual aspects and aesthetic values.
Prof Ng Wun Jern as the project's Principal Advisor and Investigator from NEWRI and Evelyn as the project manager represented the project team to receive the award from IES President Er. Edwin Khew Teck Fook, in the presence of Asst. Prof Dr Thanes Weerasiri, AFEO Chairman, and Ir. Ong Ching Loon, Secretary General of AFEO.
The award was shared with the University of Peradeniya (UOP), Dr Shameen Jinadasa, the project's PI from UOP, and local government agencies on 21 November 2017 in Kandy, Sri Lanka, in conjunction with the signing of new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between UOP and NEWRI.
