​Prof Shane Snyder joined NTU on 19 February 2018, as the new Executive Director of the Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute (NEWRI). 

At a NEWRI staff reception held on the same day, Prof Louis Phee, Acting Dean, College of Engineering introduced Prof Snyder to the NEWRI staff, students and faculty collaborators. On behalf of the NTU management, Prof Phee also thanked Dr Adil Minoo Dhalla for his stewardship of NEWRI as its Interim Executive Director for the past seven months, and presented him with a token of appreciation from the NEWRI Leadership team.

Prof Snyder’s appointment follows an international search for Founding Executive Director, NEWRI, Prof Ng Wun Jern’s successor, chaired by NTU ​Board of Trustees Member Prof Alexander Zehnder.​

Pr​of Snyder, who has also been appointed Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NTU, was a Professor of Chemical & Environmental Engineering at the University of Arizona, ​where he held joint appointments in the Colleges of Life Sciences and Public Health. At the University of Arizona, he also co-directed the Arizona Laboratory for Emerging Contaminants and the Water & Energy Sustainable Technology Centre. He also served as a Visiting Professor at National University o​f Singa​pore for the past 6 years.​

For over 20 years, his research has focused on the identification, fate​ and health relevance of emerging environmental pollutants. He and his teams have published over 200 manuscripts and book chapters on emerging contaminant analysis, treatment and toxicology. He currently serves as an Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Chemosphere.

A Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator of numerous funded research projects, Prof Snyder also provided counsel on water reuse and management issues in the US and beyond. He has been invited several times to brief the Congress of the United States on emerging issues in water quality, and was appointed to the World Health Organisation’s Drin​king Water Advisory Panel and the US National Academy of Science’s National Research Council Committee on Water Reuse. He is also a Fellow of the International Water Association. He received his PhD from Michigan State University in the US.

NEWRI welcomes Prof Snyder and looks forward to his leadership for NEWRI’s next phase of development and growth.
